(Injured. He was injured severely, his pelvis was crushed, leg shattered,
and other bones broken, when the roof came down onto him, in
the Cochran Mine, Oct. 1945. He was thought to be dead and a retrieval of
the body was made in which a bar was used to pry the rock from atop him.
One of these bars punched a hole in his head. Amazingly, he survived the
ordeal and was hospitalized for 5 years. He came home on crutches on Easter
Sunday of 1951 and slipped on the ice entering his house only to return to
the hospital. Over the years he had some 15 operations and developed
ostiomialitus, which was somewhat abated with the use of antibiotics in the
1970's.);
