| The following is from a letter published
in "The Independent," Latrobe, PA, July, 1995 from Robert L. Jenkins, of
Virginia, about the above picture.
The Brandenville Company Store pictured above, belonged to the Saxman Coal & Coke Company, of Brandenville. This frame building is still standing and has been made into a store room and apartments by the Cignetto family (ca.1995). The building is still standing on the main street of Bradenville. The Saxman Coal & Coke Company had sold out to the Latrobe-Connellsville Coal & Coke Company and this building was for the Derry No. 1 Mine Company Store. In 1907 the first building burned down and the building pictured was built. This store was like the Kaufmann's store in Pittsburgh (a Pittsbugh Department Store that is no longer in business) it sold "Everything Under the Sun." It sold everything from plows and shears to men's and women's suits. At that time it had the reputation of selling more goods than any store in Westmoreland County. As to the people in the picture, I knew them all and as a teenager I rode on that store wagon and helped the driver deliver the customers' orders to their homes. George Steward was the store manager. The store sold dynamite and caps to the coal miners to use in the mines, and as he was demonstrating to one of the miners how to use the dynamite and caps, one of the caps exploded and blew out one of his eyes. Back when the coal company ran the store, Bradenville had a railroad station and the store brought supplies such as flour, potatoes and sugar by the railroad carload. Also beef cattle for slaughter. |
