A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Dorothy Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Dorothy Mine & Coke Works, of the H.C. Frick Coke Company, Dorothy, Unity Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Dorothy Mine, Feb. 26, 1901, while at work in No. 3 entry.  The accident occurred on the right turn, shortly after they had loaded this first car.  They were new men at this mine, having just commenced work on the night turn.);

(Nov. 25, 1906, Frederick Herr, German, Fire Boss, was instantly killed by a fall of slate in No. 1/2 entry, in the Dorothy Mine.  He had taken Peter and Frank Sulive to clear up a fall and before putting them to work he went upon the fall to examine the slate above as to its safety, and while thus engaged the slate fell.  He lost his life while strictly performing his duty.)
