A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the

Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Edna No. 2  Mine, Edna No. 2 & Wendel, Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.  The miners names have been complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski: newspaper obits, Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of miners submitted by various people.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Prosecuted for Violation of the Mining Laws:  September, 1910 - Information was made against Barney Gilabofsky, charged with taking matches, cigarette paper and tobacco into the safety lamp stion of Edna No. 2 Mine of the Pittsburg & Baltimore Coal Company.  Defendant was arrested, entered a plea of guilty, and on September 1, 1910, was sentenced to pay a fine of $15.00 and costs.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by being caught between mine car and entry pillar while coming out of No. 6 face entry down a one percent grade.  It is supposed that he saw a fall on the motor road and just as the motor was near the fall he jumped off, and when the motor struck the fall the mine cars left the track and caught him, in Edna No. 2 Mine, Aug. 24, 1909.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof at the face of an entry.  A cross-timber had been set by timbermen to support the roof near the face just before the machine was taken in to cut the place, and they sounded the roof before the machine commenced to cut and considered it safe, but when backing out the machine after making the finishing cut a piece of roof coal fell and struck Kostlish, in the Edna No. 2 Mine, Nov. 9, 1914.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured between entry pillar and mine car.  As he was nearing the cut-through between the two face entries he walked alongside of trip on the tight side of the road, and while applying the brake on the cars his clothes caught on the mine car and he was dragged to a narrow place at curve of cut-through and caught between pillar and mine car, in Edna No. 2 Mine, Oct. 13, 1909.  Died the next day in the Pittsburg hospital.)

Vetergan, John
(Austrian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1910, Edna No. 2 Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 53, married.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught between mine car and entry pillar when the mine cars jumped the track at the neck of a room, in Edna No. 2 Mine, March 30, 1910.  Died April 8, at hospital.  He had been warned not to stand in the neck of the room while the trip was passing, as it was only in a distance of four feet from entry.)
