Export No. 1 & No. 2 Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Export No. 1 Mine & Export No. 2 Mine, Export, Franklin Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being run over by loaded mine car.  He was dropping a loaded mine car of slate from dip entry, on a 2 per cent grade, to main side track.  He jumped on front end of the mine car and in cutting the mule loose from the car he fell off and the car passed over his left leg.  Cutting it off, in Export No 2 Mine, Aug. 27, 1909.  He died two days later in the hospital.)

(On July 25, Joseph Harvat, Hungarian, outside laborer, was instantly killed under the tipple at Export Mine, by being run over with a railroad car.  He was a slack trimmer, and was down in front of the car on the track.  The car dropper was letting a railroad car down on this track, and it having a bad brake bumped into the railroad car in front of which Harvat was working, and he was run over.  His place should have been on the top of the car and not down in front.)

(On December 12, Rody Kareponzie, Polish, outside laborer, was so seriously injured under the tipple at Export Mine that he died on December 17. He was crushed between railroad car and the timbers of the tipple. He was trying to uncouple a shop car from one to be loaded with coal, and was caught between the cars and tipple.  He was not a competent person for the kind of work he was doing.)

(Killed.  Injured, caught in mining machine, in the Export Mine, Feb. 1, 1902.  Yeronius was employed as a machine runner and had undercut a proper distance and was then backing out when he stepped upon the machine to loosen the front jack.  He foot slipped, allowing the bit chain to come in contact with his pantaloons and draw his leg between the chain and machine frame, thereby crushing it, which resulted in his death.)
