| HISTORY: Late in the 19th century, a Philadelphia based corporation undertook to conduct coal mining operations at Pleasant Valley, in the mid-northwestern part of Penn Township. This corporation, Elkins Gas Coal Company, acquired extensive mineral properties in the Pleasant Valley vicinity of Penn Township between ca.1892 and ca.1896, as well as 115 acres of surface land from C.S.O. Tintsman. The mine site was on Byers Run and PA SR4036 (Pleasant Valley Road), where it intersects with Chicken Street. One of the mine's many openings entered the hillside now traversed by the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Pleasant Valley Mine was idle the greater part of ca.1896. Until ca.1902, the mine was called Pleasant Valley Mine. In 1902 The New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Company acquired Elkins Gas Coal Company, and renamed the mine Lyons Run Mine. The name was derived from the Lyons Run spur line built by the Turtle Creek Valley Branch Railroad in ca.1892 to serve the Pleasant Valley Mine. The Lyons Run Mine was run by the New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Company untill March 24, 1904, when the company conveyed its coal properties to Pittsburgh Coal Company of Pennsylvania. From 1904 to 1916 the New York and Cleveland Gas Coal Company operated as a subsidery of Pittsburgh Coal Company of Pennsylvania operated Lyons Run Mine. Lyons Run Mine was idle the greater part of 1915. In ca.1916 the Pittsburgh Coal Company of Pennsylvania and the Monongahela River Consolidated Coal and Coke Company merged and formed the Pittsburgh Coal Company. After ca.1916 the Lyons Run Mine was operated by the Pittsburgh Coal Company. In 1945, Pittsburgh Coal Company merged with Consolidated Coal Company, forming Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Company. This company some years later, in the 1950's, was reorganized as Consolidation Coal Company [ConSol]. |
