A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the S. H. Smith Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the S. H. Smith Mine, Osburn Station, Derry Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Superintendent, ca.1898, ca.1900, ca.1901, of the S. H. Smith Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, for Ligonier Coal Company.)

Kuhns, James
(American Miner Boy, Pick Miner ca.1900, S.H. Smith Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 18, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of coal and slate, in the S. H. Smith Mine, Feb. 2, 1900.);
(James Kuhns was instantly killed February 2d by a fall of roof coal and slate.  The accident occurred at face of No. 6 room pillaroff 3 entyr (Dip).  Kuhns was in a stooping position at the time undercutting coal.  The distance across the face of pillar was 18 feet and the distance from face of pillar to last row of post was from four to five feet.  The roof coal which was one foot thick and the slate about four inches thick.)
